WHAT:
dance4life is an international initiative which aims to inspire, mobilise and unite young people in the battle against HIV/AIDS. The programme uses dance, music, film and workshops to encourage young people engage in the issue of HIV/AIDS and their own sexual health.
WHO:
576,000 young people in 27 countries around the world have engaged in the programme to date. The Irish element of the programme is being run by the Irish Family Planning Association and is offered to schools and youth organisations free of charge.
WHY:
Half of the new HIV infections every day are among young people under 25 years old. Not only are they the most affected by HIV, but they have never known a world without HIV. Young people are the future and they have the power to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS. By uniting all over the world and demanding change, they can make a difference.
ACTIVITIES:
The programme is based around the dance4life drill, a dance that is taught to students in each of the participating countries. Students also partipate in skills4life workshops which equip young people with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. An outreach advocacy programme helps young people to share the knowledge they have gained with their peers.
