Male Condom
Effectiveness: 93% effective.
What is it?
Barrier Contraception. A latex or polyurethane (rubber) sheath, that fits snugly over the mans penis when it is erect. It has a teat at the top to catch the sperm. The condom is rolled down over the erect penis before sex, and should be held on after ejaculation (coming) to stop the sperm escaping as he withdraws.
Is it for you?
If it is properly used it provides protection from STIs (it is the most effective protection against these) and pregnancy. It is strongly recommended when you have a new partner, have multiple partners, or are unsure of your partners sexual history. They can also be used as well as a form of hormonal contraception to provide protection for STIs.
Condoms can fail by tearing or coming off during sex. Oil-based lubricants, such as Vaseline, should not be used with condoms as they can waken the latex and cause it to break. Some people also find that they can interfere with spontaneity and sensation, but it can be fun to integrate them into fore-play, and there are many condom varieties that can increase sensation.
