Reproductive Health Supplies

Lack of condoms threatens the fight against poverty.

Since the population conference in Cairo major efforts have been made throughout the world to advocate safer sex, and also to prevent HIV and unwanted pregnancies. A self-evident precondition for this work to be effective is that contraceptives and other required supplies are made available to those who demand them. However, evidence shows that there is a major lack of condoms and other contraceptives in many countries.

There is also a lack of the equipment needed for childbirth and maternal care, and also for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV testing. Also, in many places, supplies for the performance of safe abortions and post-abortion care are lacking, even in countries where abortion is legal.

There are many consequences of the shortfall. Women who do not have access to contraception have children too early and more children than they can take care of or afford. Unwanted pregnancies lead to unsafe abortions, and people who do not have access to condoms are exposed to major risks of STIs and HIV.

IFPA demands:

  • That Ireland increases its contributions to international organisations working with the distribution of SRHR supplies.
  • That Irish Aid ensures that access to condoms, other contraceptives and SRHR supplies are included in the planning of Irish development aid projects.
  • That Ireland supports developing countries themselves to build up a functioning system for the production or import, quality control and distribution of condoms, other contraceptives and SRHR supplies.
