Chlamydia
Chlamydia is caused by a bacterial infection. It is a very common sexually transmitted infection and often has no symptoms. If left untreated, it can cause infertility or ectopic pregnancy in women and infertility in men.
How do I get it?
- Sexual contact with an infected partner including vaginal, oral and anal sex and skin-to-skin contact
Symptoms
- Most women and many men have no symptoms
- There may be a vaginal discharge
- May cause recurrent cystitis
- Can cause irregular bleeding on the pill or unusual bleeding between periods
- Can cause abdominal pain
- Men may have discharge from the penis or pain passing urine
Diagnosis
- Examination of vagina or penis
- Cervical swab
- Penile swab
- Urine test
- Please note that all patients must avoid emptying their bladder for 90 minutes prior to appointment
Treatment
- Antibiotics
- If left untreated it can lead to problems with fertility
Follow Up
- Full screening for other sexually transmitted infections
- Screening for partners
