Trichomonas

Trichomonas is caused by a parasite passed on through sexual contact.

How do I get it?

• Sexual contact with an infected partner including vaginal and anal sex and skin-to-skin contact.

Symptoms

• Itchy discharge, which may be smelly or greenish in colour
• Men may have no symptoms at all
• Soreness or itch on penis

Diagnosis

• Examination of vagina or penis
• Swabs of the area
• Sometimes it is picked up during cervical screening

Treatment

• Tablets by mouth.

Follow Up

• Full screening for other sexually transmitted infections
• Treatment for partners
