Gonorrhoea is caused by bacteria. If left untreated it can cause serious health problems including infertility.

How do I get it?

  • Sexual contact with an infected partner, including vaginal, oral and anal sex and skin-to-skin contact

Symptoms

  • Most women and many men have no symptoms
  • There may be a vaginal discharge
  • May cause recurrent cystitis
  • Can cause irregular bleeding on the pill or unusual bleeding between periods
  • Can cause abdominal pain
  • Men may have discharge from the penis or pain passing urine

Diagnosis

  • Examination of the vagina or the penis
  • Swabs of the vagina, penis, anus or throat
  • Urine test
  • Please note that patients must avoid emptying their bladder for 90 minutes prior to appointment

Treatment

  • Antibiotics

Follow Up

  • Full screening for other sexually transmitted infections
  • Screening for partners
